Eligible homeowners and other qualifying property owners in Ireland can apply for the new SEAI Battery Energy Storage System Grant, which provides a flat-rate payment of €600 towards the installation of an eligible home battery storage system.
The scheme supports the installation of domestic battery storage, allowing electricity to be stored and used at a later time. SEAI says battery storage can improve energy flexibility and help households lower electricity costs.
To qualify, the battery must have a capacity of 5kWh or larger. Battery systems below 5kWh are not eligible for this grant.
What Is the SEAI Battery Grant?
The grant is a set-rate payment of €600 for qualifying battery systems of 5kWh or larger. It does not cover the full cost of a battery installation, so any remaining installation costs must be covered by the applicant.
Battery storage allows electricity to be stored for use at a later time. For homes with solar PV, this can allow surplus electricity generated during the day to be stored and used when required, including when solar generation is lower.
What Size Battery Qualifies?
The grant applies to battery storage systems with a capacity of:
5kWh or larger
Battery systems smaller than 5kWh are not eligible for the scheme. The installation must also comply with the relevant SEAI technical requirements.
When Can I Apply?
Applicants must receive their Grant Offer from SEAI before starting the battery installation.
Once the grant has been approved, the installation must also comply with the conditions set out in the Grant Offer.
Who Can Apply for the €600 Battery Grant?
The scheme is available to qualifying properties owned by:
- Homeowners, including private landlords
- Owner Management Companies (OMCs)
- Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs)
The property must have an MPRN and must have been built and occupied before 2025.
A property is not eligible if it has previously received funding for a battery at the same MPRN. The installation must also meet the scheme’s technical requirements.
Can I Get the Battery Grant If I Already Have Solar Panels?
Yes.
If you already have a solar PV system or an existing solar PV application, you can apply for the battery grant separately, provided you meet the relevant eligibility requirements.
SEAI states that an existing solar PV application does not need to be amended to add the battery. Instead, applicants should submit a new application for the battery grant through the SEAI portal.
If you are installing both solar PV and a battery system, the two measures can also be included in a single application.
As with all applications, the relevant eligibility requirements must be met and the battery installation must not have started before the grant offer is received.
All grant applications with solar PV present in the property must carry out a post-works BER assessment. This is required before drawing down the grant. It must be carried out by a registered SEAI BER Assessor.
